Description
The modern southeastern answer to scab, and the clearest example in this file of the second rights model.
The patent names the cultivar ‘Ga. 00-7-75’. Nobody sells it under that name; it is sold as Avalon, and only by nurseries the university has licensed. Where a USDA release goes out as a public variety anyone may graft, this one is a controlled channel — which is neither better nor worse, but is a different set of obligations attached to the same kind of plant.
It was bred as a replacement for ‘Desirable’ in the humid southeast. Read that as the whole southeastern story in one line: the incumbent is scab-susceptible and expensive to spray, and the exit is genetic.
