Find the Constraint, Close the Loop

Fifteen years inside industrial systems taught me one discipline. Living systems answer to exactly the same one.

I spent fifteen years inside industrial systems: electrician, then facilities and capital projects, leading a mill expansion, automating lines, and standing as plant liaison on a half-billion-dollar build. People assume that background is the opposite of farming. It is the same job with slower feedback.

In a plant you learn one lesson before all the others, usually the hard way. Improving anything except the bottleneck improves nothing. You can rebuild a pump, upgrade a drive, and shave seconds off a changeover, and if none of it sits on the constrained step, throughput does not move a hair. You spent money to make a spreadsheet look busy.

Land has bottlenecks too, and they move

On land the constraint is rarely the thing being sold at the farm store. It tends to sit in one of four places, and it rotates by season:

Water first. Not annual rainfall, but the gap between when it arrives and when you need it. Fertility second, and specifically whether it cycles on the property or arrives on a pallet. Labor third, which on a small operation usually means one person’s hands. And attention fourth, which is the one nobody budgets and everybody runs out of.

The discipline is to identify which one is actually binding this month and refuse to spend on the others until it moves. A new implement does not help an operation whose limit is that one person cannot be in two fields on the same Saturday.

Measure before you intervene

Plants do not throw an alarm code. That is the real difference between a mill and a field, and it is why records beat memory every time.

If you did not write down the planting date, you do not know the days to maturity on your ground, only the number on the packet. If you did not weigh the birds, you have a feeling about cost per pound, not a number. A season is a single data point, and you get a few dozen of them in a working life. Losing one to a bad memory is expensive in a way that is easy to miss.

This is a large part of why I ended up writing software. Not because a farm needs an app, but because a constraint you cannot measure is a constraint you will keep guessing at.

Closing the loop is the return on the whole thing

Industrial engineering calls it recovery. Permaculture calls it stacking functions. Same move: take an output that currently costs money to remove and make it an input somewhere upstream.

Bedding under poultry is the clearest example I know. Carbon laid down under birds absorbs manure where it falls, which means it stops being a disposal problem. It composts, which means the fertility stops being a purchase. It finishes into ground that wanted organic matter anyway, which means it becomes growth. One material, three jobs, no truck.

Every closed loop does two things at once. It removes a cost and it removes a dependency, and the second one matters more in a bad year.

The transferable part

You do not need an industrial background to run this. The sequence is short enough to hold in your head:

Find the step that limits everything else. Measure it, in numbers, for one honest season. Fix that step and only that step. Then look for the output you are currently paying to get rid of, and give it a job. Repeat, because the constraint will have moved.

Living systems are more forgiving than a production line, and far less patient than people expect. They will run without you. They just will not run well without somebody asking what is actually holding them back.
